MEMORIES MEAN A LOT

One of the earliest impacts of Alzheimer’s or other related diseases is the inability to recall recent events. However, long-term memory is usually intact throughout several stages of the disorder.

Therefore, take advantage of this before it is too late, and don’t miss the stories of the wonderful historical events in your loved one’s life. You want to pass these great stories on to the younger generations in your family. These stories can be written, audio/video taped, or in the form of a picture album or scrapbook.

Topics to help you get started in a discussion and to gather pictures could be: early childhood, family gatherings, school years, special holidays, travel, jobs, military experience, or wars they lived through. It could also include stories on friends, hobbies, politics, achievements and special awards, and changes they have seen through the years.

Reminiscing with videos and pictures early in the disease process can be a pleasurable and meaningful activity for our loved one. As the disease progresses, this can also be used to help your loved one and family have more meaningful communication.

A Business Unique to Austin

Along with the recent special on ABC regarding Austin being the number one town for retiring baby boomers, there is a most unique business in Austin that finds employment for those adults older than 50. The agency is known as Senior Work Solutions, and it is one of only a handful of businesses in the nation that focuses exclusively on staffing seniors.

The business, which has been in operation for about 3 years, specializes in filling gaps in the workforce with senior-level expertise. Typically these individuals are very reliable in their work ethics since they have the” old-school” work principles. They will come in everyday and on time -- they want to work to stay mentally, socially and physically active. They have a desire to remain productive and useful. They are not looking for a high-stress job or a six-figure income.

“The goal of Senior Work Solutions to create an efficient and effective vehicle for matching the skills, expertise, and flexible work needs of seniors with the staffing and strategic talent management needs of employers.”

If you have family members or friends who would like to continue to stay gainfully employed, whatever their reasons may be, have them contact Senior Work Solutions. They have a web site, Seniorworksolutions.com.

Summer 2011 CAREER FAIR

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

1:00pm – 4:00pm

It is that time of the year again for the career fair at Virginia College at Austin, and Hill Country Care Providers will again be participating at the fair.

The Quarterly Career Fair will be open to VCA students and alumni. The fair is an excellent way for companies to connect with students for all positions, from entry-level to advanced, and internship opportunities as well. The fair will focus on opportunities from a wide variety of industries, such as paralegal, business, health and wellness, and network engineers.

Hill Country Care Providers found the career fair very worthwhile – they made the new graduates aware of businesses that are available in the community as well as unique opportunities in caring for the largest population in the United States – the baby boomers.
